Research dedicated to the presentation of products in perfumery between 1882 and 1945 with the Ecole du Louvre

The history of perfume between 1882 and 1945

The aim of this 3-year doctoral research project is to explain the role played by universal and international exhibitions in the birth and development of modern perfumery. The research will focus mainly on three events, two Universal Exhibitions (1889 and 1900) and one International Exhibition of Decorative Arts (1925). Both exhibitions were held in Paris.

This chronological period marks a veritable golden age for French perfumery, which is the focus of this study. Between industrial and scientific progress, the development of a new relationship with consumerism, and the appearance of new scents, perfumery at the turn of the 20th century stood out as one of the most promising areas of the new “French luxury”.
